Unlimited Rabbeting for Perfect Edges
When working near edges or on rabbets, traditional electronic planers often leave a lip that has to be removed by hand, but the Festool HL 850 E planer eliminates that extra step. Because the planer head is mounted to one side, it sits flush with the opposite side of the planer housing. And because this allows it to plane across the entire width of the rabbet, you can use the HL 850 E to make perfect cuts that are flush to an adjacent surface.

The HL 850 E's thumb-lock depth control is easy to manipulate with one hand, so it's easy to adjust the planer's depth settings to match the resistance of the material you're working with. The versatile HL 850 E can handle 0 to 9/64-inch cutting depths.

A retractable side guard offers improved job-site or workshop safety. This guard swings up and to the side as the rabbet depth increases, which ensures that planing up to the edge in deep rabbets is not a problem.

Chatter-Free Single-Knife Cutter Head
The HL 850 E's metal carbide, spiral cutter head is built to deliver a smooth, "chatter-free" cut, and it features a replaceable blade, so you can utilize the same durable head for longer. This head allows the planer to sheer-cut materials, delivering cleaner, smoother cuts that are ready to glue or finish, and also allows the planer to be quieter for an improved operator experience. The head measures 3-15/64 inches wide, and its unique setup keeps blade changes quick--you simply loosen three screws, replace the blade, and then retightens the screws. The blade is self-aligning, so you can get back to work quickly and accurately.

The planer also accepts a range of interchangeable heads, which allows you to achieve distressed looks, hand-hewn textured effects, and a range of other finishes.

MMC Electronics and Application-Specific Performance
Different applications place different demands on your tools, and the HL 850 E provides equally good results when working with a variety of materials, thanks to its advanced MMC (multi-material control) electronics. It offers soft starts that won't harm your work surface, and it has the ability to maintain a consistent 10,000-rpm drive-shaft speed, even under heavy loads. All this translates to smoother results and easier handling.

For even more varied application-specific performance, the HL 850 E can be converted into a stationary joiner. You simply need to add a bench unit stand and an angle stop to your setup (not included).

Efficient, Integrated Chip Extraction
The HL 850 E is designed to offer efficient, near-total chip and dust extraction for a safer, cleaner work environment. It allows for left- or right-sided mounting of an extractor hose, and offers optimum performance when used with a 36-millimeter hose and either the Festool CT 22 dust extractor or the Festool CT 33 dust extractor.

The Festool HL 850 E Planer is backed by a three-year limited warranty and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Treasurer opinions some customers:>>
A superior planer for surfacing
All handheld planers make the same basic cut. You can get a tool that does the work for less than $100. Most run with twice as many knives as the Festool, a quality which you'd think would be a good thing.

Well, Festool makes more of less there.

Other planers I've used produce a flurry of little airborn chips - at, in my experience, earsplitting noise levels. The Festool, due to its one curved knife produces a longer shaving which at at times resembles what you'd get from a scrub plane (your hamster would love them) and the shearing cut is relatively quiet as well. I use ear protection anyway, but even with earplugs, quieter tools are less fatiguing to use.

I bought the Festool because:

1) I know it's relatively quiet and screaming power tools set my teeth on edge.

2) It rabbets to unlimited depth and 3.5" wide - a capacity overblown as to be useless to me in my past cabinetmaking and the refined furniture I've built in the...
