When I first received the item, I couldn't have been happier. It was easily assembled and worked beautifully. I use it to split small (16-18 inch logs that have already been split when delivered) into smaller logs to help keep the fire burning. The logs are all well-seasoned.

After about three weeks of flawless use, the hydraulic cylinder simply stopped working. I followed the insructions by adding hydraulic jack oil, and while it is now working somewhat, it takes at least twice the number of strokes to effect the same movement as when I first began to use it.

I'm thinking that I need the hydraulic unit replaced. I will be happy to return the one that is no longer working satisfactorily. That seems to make more sense than trying to return the entire splitter. What do I need to do?

My SpeeCo is not this model but it's very similar. I see some great improvements on these photos:
1. On this one the Engine is opposite the operator. Mine is on the operator side and the exhaust is right under my nose.
2. Larger diameter wheels make it easier to jockey around by hand. My little wheels get stopped dead by a 1 inch stick on the ground.
3. Hinged front support stand. Mine is put on and off with a cotter pin.

But in the photos, I still see features I had to modify on mine. I welded on a bigger foot because large diameter wood slips off the little SpeeCo foot. Check out the foot on the Steele Products SP-LS22.
I ground down the head of the bolt at the cylinder rod end because it's dangerous to operator's hands. Also I ground off the threaded end of that bolt and rounded over the nut.

I also bought the add-on four-way splitter head, which has proved to be a timesaver. Two bad things: (1) It came unassembled and packed in a crate. The vendor did NOT tell me that assembly was required. It took my son, an accomplished mechanic, two full days to assemble it. (2) I paid extra for "liftgate delivery," meaning that the delivery driver would offload it, supposedly at my door or in my driveway, instead of my having to have someone on hand to offload it. The driver offloaded it at the STREET and left it there. It weighs close to a thousand pounds. I used it to split about 8 cord last season and it split everything I've thrown at it with ease (like even knurly twisted green trunk stumps over 30" diameter), and given the lower price point relative to other professional level machines, the cycle time on the ram isn't horrible either. Obviously if you want to spend 5 or 6 grand on a Timberwolf, you'll get a better machine but that's a lot of dough.

My only two complaints on this machine are; 1) the ram doesn't slid inside a form fitted protective cover on retraction to assist with removing jammed wood on the ram so just be prepared with...
